CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE IN CATS
DATE : 2025-02-03
SUMMARY
progressive loss of renal function
tending to scarred, shrunken kidneys
SIGNS
+/- diarrhoea
drinking a lot
+/- lethargy
weight loss
EXAMINATION
uraemic breath
weight loss
pale
smaller, shrunken kidneys on examination
BLOOD TESTS
BUN/Creatinine/Phosphorus: gives indication of renal tissue function. Usually rises when 75% of renal tissue is compromised
SDMA: Newer test SDMA starts rising when 25% of renal tissue is compromised. Therefore gives earlier diagnosis
UPC: Urine Protein Creatinine Ratio. A different test measuring whether the membrane in the kidneys is preventing blood protein leaking into urine (and therefore causing weight loss). Normally body protein doesn't leak into the urine
TREATMENT
Low protein, low phosphorus prescription food
Semintra if protein is leaking from kidneys into urine
